United States in the Global Melting Scrap Trade

The United States has one of the longest histories in organised metals production and recycling. The country's industrial base supports steel mills, copper smelters, aluminium producers, zinc refiners, and stainless steel makers. Material moves both within the country and to international destinations.

The sector is structured around a mix of publicly listed integrated producers and privately held diversified recyclers and traders. Major export gateways include the West Coast ports for Pacific flows, the East Coast ports for Atlantic and Asian shipments, the Gulf Coast for Latin American and Asian destinations, and the southeastern ports for trans-Atlantic and India-bound material.
